Late nights, ambition and Barry
Working nights and weekends, TravelNest came to life. Doug quit his day job in marketing and worked full-time on setting up the business from a tiny office in Dundee. We took on our first employee, Barry Evans in 2016. As Product Operations Manager he remains a key member of the TravelNest team today. Right from the start, we attracted a wide range of properties. We still do today. It's one of the many great things about TravelNest - it works for so many different types of vacation rental. From lodges, cottages and chalets to luxury villas, city flats and penthouses - we've got them all!
Building a superhero team
Our objective was to assemble a talented team of engineering gurus and software experts to build the TravelNest platform and take the business to the next level. As we started to grow, word got about us and what we offer. Vacation rental owners started to join us, so we invested in our sales and customer success teams.
As demand grew, the need for a software solution which could maximise bookings for holiday rentals became clear.
Ready for lift off
Things really started to take off in 2017, when we secured £3m in seed funding from investors including Pentech Ventures, Mangrove Capital Partners, Frontline Ventures and Mark Logan, former Chief Operations Officer at Skyscanner. In 2018, Scottish Enterprise awarded us a £2.3m grant to accelerate our growth, with Public Finance and Digital Economy Minister Kate Forbes popping by TravelNest HQ for a cuppa. We’re super ambitious and have exciting plans for continued sustainable growth. We want to scale our operations and propel our efforts globally. Now based in the heart of Edinburgh, we have around 50 people working across our engineering, data, design, marketing, sales, finance, people, customer and partner success functions.
